CRMS Biologist Requisition
Position Summary
This is a salaried, field position assigned to an office to be established in the Sulphur, LA, area. Residency near or in the town of Sulphur is preferred. The job will require local travel along the coast of southwestern Louisiana within an approximate 50 mile radius of Sulphur. Excellent field skills and local knowledge of coastal area preferred. Ability to work with small team, reliability, dependability, and communication skills are essential.
Position Requirements
Minimum Qualifications (CRS 1)
A baccalaureate degree with a major in one of the following fields (a masters degree (thesis or non-thesis) or Ph.D. in any of the qualifying fields may be substituted for the baccalaureate degree): biological sciences, environmental sciences, atmospheric sciences, natural science (wildlife and/or fisheries science, marine science, coastal resource management, wetland management, natural resource management or studies, and forestry), chemistry, ecology, physical geography, geosciences, statistics, oceanography, planning, landscape architecture, engineering, or agronomy.
General Duties
Assist in collecting field samples, compiling and cataloging data, performing data entry, analyzing data and preparing summary and statistical reports and maps;
Assist in inventorying land uses, solid and hydrological and meteorological regimes, and obtaining and analyzing biological samples and data to determine which conditions may cause or be causing adverse impacts to coastal wetlands, marshes, and flood plains and to the ecosystems and other natural resources within these areas;
Assist in making verbal presentations and/or preparing written technical reports documenting field investigations of sites; technical reviews.
Assist in quality assurance evaluations of environmental data prior to incorporating into computerized data base(s) or Geographic Information Computer System (GIS);
Conduct basic analyses of environmental data using computerized data base(s) or GIS;
Assist in implementing scientific studies designed to create, restore, enhance, protect and preserve the state's coastal wetlands, marshes, and flood plains and other natural resources vital to the state's economy and/or the safety of its citizens (private, public, institutional, industrial, and governmental).
Assist in preparing technical reports relative to the protection, conservation and enhancement of coastal wetlands, marshes and flood plain areas in Louisiana
Maintain map files, planning document files, contract files, publication items, projects lists, etc.
Job Conditions/Environment
Safety Experience
High safety standards are required in this extensive field effort which will be conducted from a variety of water crafts (air boats, tunnel hauls, bay boats, etc); also required is the field ability to collect high quality data under various weather conditions throughout the year along coastal Louisiana. Safe motor vehicle operation to and from job sites is required.
Knowledge of local area
Knowledge of ecological factors affecting coastal areas, knowledge of coastal processes; knowledge of local culture will enhance the job performance of prospective candidate and will be a consideration for employment.
Physical work
The capability to handle field equipment and to endure long days conducting field work in coastal areas is required.
